Five Questions to Ask Before Choosing Countertops
Movement, finish, maintenance, layout, and installed cost all matter before a slab becomes a countertop.
The best countertop choice is not based on color alone. Ask these five questions before approving the material and fabrication plan.
1. How much movement does the material have?
Strong linear patterns can change direction at corners and seams. Review how the pieces will be oriented and where the eye will notice pattern changes.
2. What does the finish reveal?
Polished, honed, leathered, and textured surfaces reflect light and show fingerprints differently. Natural stone may also contain fissures, mineral deposits, and other slab-specific characteristics.
3. What maintenance fits your household?
Some manufactured surfaces are nonporous. Natural stone may need sealing and specific care. Choose the routine you are realistically willing to follow.
4. Does prefab or custom make more sense?
Prefab quartz can be economical when the dimensions, color, edge, and layout fit. Custom slabs give more control over material, size, movement, and special details.
5. What is included in the installed price?
Compare material, templating, fabrication, sink and cooktop cutouts, seams, edge work, backsplash, demolition, installation, and any project-specific exclusions together.
